List of Sledge Hammer! episodes |
"To Live and Die on TV" is the 11th episode of the television series Sledge Hammer!. It originally aired on ABC in the United States on December 13, 1986. The title is a parody of the 1985 film To Live and Die in L.A.. The episode features real-life game show host Peter Marshall.[1]
Hammer and Doreau are assigned to investigate the death of a game show contestant, who was found underwater in the car he won on a recent episode of the show. Hammer suspects that the show's host Bob Kenny (Peter Marshall) was behind the death, as he has been embezzling the show's prize money. To prove his theory correct, Hammer enters the show as a contestant.
Series creator Alan Spencer first met episode co-writer Brian Pollack when they both worked on a game show, which was coincidentally hosted by Peter Marshall. Spencer was fired by the game show's producers, who thought his writing was too "off the wall" for daytime TV.
The game show portrayed in the episode was changed to a "local show" at the last minute, as censors would not allow a crooked show to be identified as a network program.
This was the first episode to feature recurring character Officer Mayjoy, played by Leslie Morris.
